Monday night, the Saugatuck school board voted not to allow a video about coming out to be shown in a sexual education class.

The district had been considering adding a video to the 8th grade sexual education curriculum that was aimed at preventing bullying based on sexual orientation.

Supporters asserted that the video promoted understanding. Which, given the prominence of bullying in schools these days, is something they feel should be focused on.

Board members said that while it's an appropriate topic to teach in class, they did not believe the material matched the goal of the lesson.

Administrators say they will now look for other ways to discourage bullying based on sexual orientation.
