For the next two weeks, any time that you visit the town that you consider to be Rockford, you'll actually be visiting Griffinville.

The City of Rockford has renamed itself as Griffinville for the next two weeks, while the Grand Rapids Griffins take on the Rockford IceHogs in the AHL's Western Conference Finals.

The City Council of Rockford made the announcement Tuesday after voting on the matter at a meeting Monday night.

According to the City of Rockford (here in Michigan), the city is named after the city of Rockford, Ill. Michigan's Rockford was known as Laphamville until 1865 when a newly arrived resident from Illinois' Rockford made the suggestion while the railroad was pushing the city to shorten its name.

The Michigan Rockford just simply couldn't associate themselves with our rivals while the Griffins fight in the Calder Cup Playoffs.

The Griffins will play game one against the Icehogs Wednesday night at Van Andel Arena.
