Betty Who stepped into a sun-drenched New York studio last month to talk about her influences and songwriting. She also performed a stripped-down version of her hit, “Somebody Loves You.”‘
The Australian singer, born Jessica Anne Newham, cites singer-songwriter Missy Higgins as one of her biggest influences.
“I taught myself how to play piano by learning her songs,” Betty Who says. “I think that made a huge difference then when I started writing. I already had an idea of how other songs were written, so when I wrote my first song — I think I was fourteen — and I was like, ‘Yeah, I get it.’ … It all makes sense. So I think I had a head start.”
The Aussie also explains that she writes each song differently. Some factors that affect the writing process? The track’s vibe, where she is and who she’s around!
