All I Want for Christmas are Scrunchies in Every Color of the Rainbow– Christmas Lists from the 90s

Hearing that the iPad is the number one things kids want for Christmas this year made me feel… well, really old. It made me nostalgic for the 90s, a seemingly simpler time, when some neon scrunchies and a My Little Pony would have blown my mind on Christmas morning.

My older brother had an unfortunate basement flooding issue recently. One good thing that came out of it is that it forced him to go through boxes of items he’d just been moving around for years. A real gem he came across was a Christmas list he’d written as a kid. His best guess is that the year was 1992, as his top desired items were silk shirts and Ninja Turtles.

Visiting my bro recently, I asked if he still had this list. I wanted to see this relic from the 1990s with my own eyes. Unfortunately, he’d purged it, but he was able to jot down a few key items from memory:

XL Silk Shirts: Neon Orange, Pink, or Green
Baggy Jeans
Starter Jacket with a front pocket: Seattle Supersonics or Chicago Bulls
Fitted Starter hat: Chicago Bulls or Supersonics
XL Sweatshirts w/ Logos: Tommy Hilfiger, Nike, Nautica. (Blue, Gray, Green)
CDs:
Albums:
Kriss Kross: Totally Krossed Out
TLC: Ooooooohhh… On the TLC Tip
Singles:
Whoomp there It is (Tag Team)
If I ever Fall in Love Again (Shai)
That’s the Way Love Goes (Janet Jackson)
Ninja Turtles Action Figures (I already have the main turtles and Shredder. I need Baxter Stockman and Splinter.)
A Supersoaker
Pogs (w/ Slammers)
Talk Boy Recorder (like from Home Alone)
Gameboy w/ Tetris
Poprocks
Basketball Cards:
Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Magic Johnson

What makes me laugh about this list is the desire for XL clothing, as my brother is, and always has been a size Small. In the 90′s though, the bigger the better. And that went for logos too. If that Nike swoosh wasn’t at least a foot long, we weren’t interested.

And the Starter gear… I had my own jacket and fitted hat– Charlotte Hornets. Was I a superfan? No no, it was all about the sweet color combination of electric teal and purple.

I remember, I was the one who actually got the Talk Boy Recorder, as seen in Home Alone (Sorry, bro.) I had the extremely stealthy pen recorder — which I would certainly need in my future as a super spy.

No idea what pogs are?Looking back it was a fad that seemed to last about 5 minutes. It was supposed to be a game in which you stacked up these little discs (pogs) and then blasted them with a larger, heavier disc (the slammer) and yeah… I don’t really remember how it all went. What I can tell you is that it was really important to have the coolest, most impressive looking “slammer” around.

And CD singles– do they even make them anymore? I believe Mariah Carey’s “Dreamlover” and “All that She Wants” from Ace of Base may have been on my list that same year.

Some other items on my list would have been jeans (tapered, of course) in every color, slouch socks, slap bracelets, a new caboodle for holding all my slap bracelets…. Ahh, the 90′s.

So what about you– what would have been on your Christmas list back in the day?
