Winter Olympics: Army Program Produces Two-Time Medalist Steven Holcomb and Four Other U.S. Bobsledders

Steven Holcomb and Steven Langton became the first American pair in 62 years to win a Winter Olympics two-man bobsled medal on Monday, claiming bronze at Sanki Sliding Center in Krasnaya Polyana, Russia, outside Sochi.

The USA-1 bobsled duo had a combined four-run time of 3 minutes, 46.27 seconds with their BMW-made sled to finish just 0.03 second ahead of the fourth-place finishers from Russia. Russia's Alexey Voevoda and Alexander Zubkov won gold with a time of 3:45.39, and Switzerland's Alex Baumann and Beat Hefti clocked 3:46.05 for silver.

Russia has created one of the world’s largest security forces for the Sochi Winter Olympics.

Doug Fry is in Sochi, Russia, to cheer on his daughter, Lyndsey Fry, a forward on the U.S. women's hockey team. The Chandler, Ariz., resident doesn't mind the security at Shayba Arena and elsewhere in Sochi given the potential threats.

“It makes me feel better, and I don’t think it’s intrusive at all considering this is a dangerous time to live in," he said. "It takes five minutes."

Winter Olympics: Indiana Skier Finds Way to Part in U.S. Slopestyle Sweep

It’s not even been three years since the International Olympic Committee brought slopestyle skiing into the Winter Olympics.

But it is what kids have been doing across the globe at ski areas and resorts for years. In terrain parks in the U.S. from coast to coast, skiers were riding every rail they could find and hucking themselves off mounds of snow wherever possible.

Among those kids was Nick Goepper, a member of the U.S. freestyle skiing team. When he started slopestyle skiing as an 11-year-old in southern Indiana, he was hooked.

Russian Figure Skater Evgeni Plushenko Retires After Abruptly Withdrawing from Winter Olympics

 

Evgeni Plushenko's time at the Sochi Winter Olympics have come to an early end and now, reportedly, so has his figure skating career.

Plushenko was in obvious pain after landing awkwardly on a triple axel during warm-ups on Thursday night. His coach, Alexei Mishin, said that he had injured his back during practice Wednesday, and simply could not skate. On Thursday morning, Plashenko withdrew from Olympic competition.
