PEOPLE DOING GOOD: Police Find A Homeless Teen And Change His Life.

Police in Barnesville, Georgia recently found a 19 year old guy named Fred Barley camping in an area near Gordon State College, which is about 50 mile south of Atlanta.  Originally they were there to kick him out; that is until they started talking to him.

Fred had ridden his little brother’s BMX bike from Conyers (which is just outside of Atlanta) in 100+ heat to start classes at Gordon State, which was about a 6 hour bike ride.  He had made it down to Barnesville a few weeks early so he could find work, which meant the dorms weren’t open yet, so he had set up camp.

After hearing this, the officers decided to help Fred out, and put him up in a hotel for a few nights.

According to Fox 5, Fred was very relieved:

“We get to talking with him asking where he’s from and he tells us story of bike ride from Conyers. I’m like man this is crazy,” said Officer Richard Carreker.

 

Officer Carreker believed him and he, along with another officer, put Fred in a hotel room.

 

“He was deeply thankful he wasn’t going to sleep in that tent,” said Carreker.

Word quickly spread around the community and people stepped in and bought him a bunch of other stuff including a new, bigger bike.  The generosity didn’t stop there. A local pizza place offered him a job, on the spot.  The owner said after she heard his story, something told her to “help him”

“She hired me on the spot. She didn't even know my first or last name,” Barley said fighting back the laughter of sheer joy.

Then someone also set up a GoFundMe page to help him get set up with books and supplies as well as pay for his tuition.  They stopped the fundraising this past weekend after the page raised over $184,000 for Fred.

Best part is Fred is so humble.  He posted a video to Facebook to thank everyone who donated and said he was going to only use what he needed now and save the rest, because he plans to go to Medical School!  He even invited everyone who donated to his graduation in 4 years!
