If you’re a Comcast/Xfinity and Netflix customer, your worlds are about to come together! Within the next 5 months you’ll be able to stream Netflix through your Comcast cable box.  A drastic change from the two former rivals who have been at odds with each other for years as Comcast tries to hold onto its market share and Netflix leads the charge of cutting cable dependency .

In the past, Netflix has helped block Comcast’s merger with Time Warner and they were on opposite sides of the net neutrality battle that happened a couple years ago.  So this new partnership is big news!

“Comcast and Netflix have reached an agreement to incorporate Netflix into X1, providing seamless access to the great content offered by both companies. We have much work to do before the service will be available to consumers later this year. We’ll provide more details at that time.”

This will be great because you’ll no longer have to constantly switch between TV inputs.  And on a larger scale, sets up what will continue to be the evolution of cable vs. streaming… eventually, your clunky cable box will go away and you’ll subscribe to apps which you'll stream on whatever device you choose. This partnership looks like it could be the first step to that happening:

Instead, industry players are proposing a different approach: They too want to ditch cumbersome set-top boxes, and instead let consumers watch pay TV on a wide range of devices. They propose offering consumers cable TV apps, although they would be made by the cable providers themselves and not by third parties.
