Mixed Feelings On Proposed River City Bike Week

Downtown Grand Rapids is a great place for festivals. We’ve definitely seen that with ArtPrize, Celebration On The Grand, and the Art Festival. But, is Grand Rapids ready for a Bike Week?

Organizers are proposing an event, which could potentially bring in 40,000 bikers from all over the country to Downtown G-Rap. They say that the event (July 17-24) could potentially bring $21 million in revenue to downtown businesses. But, some of those businesses don’t want to be a part of it.

The organizers are proposing to block off Ionia Avenue SW between W. Fulton Street and Wealthy Street SW for motorcycle parking and a parade route. Vendors would set up in parking lots south of the Van Andel Arena.

According to MLive, many musical acts have been placed “on hold” for the event including ZZ Top, The Doobie Brothers, and the Steve Miller Band. The organizers say they want the green light from the city commission before committing any more money to the event.

People are chiming in with comments on MLive’s website, saying things such as “Zombies are OK but motorcycles are not?”. They pose a good point, I suppose. Here are more of the comments.

Would this be a good thing for Grand Rapids? Chime in with your opinion!
