Did you know that kids in Michigan aren't required to go to kindergarten? I didn't until this morning, but it turns out that it's the truth. Kids in Michigan can just start right out in first grade. For now.

A new bill that's been introduced in the Michigan legislature would not only require all Michigan kids to attend kindergarten, it would also require all schools to offer full-day kindergarten.

Back in my day, half-day kindergarten was the only option, though in recent years, the state has been giving more funding to schools that provided full-day kindergarten.

This new bill would require children who turn 5 years old on or before September first to attend kindergarten that school year. If the child's birthday falls after September first, they will begin in the next school year.

Michigan isn't the only state that currently does not require its children to attend kindergarten. In fact, only 15 states and the District of Columbia require kindergarten.

House bill 4250 was introduced last week and is now being considered by a committee.
