Did The Guy Who Won ArtPrize Get The Idea From YouTube? [Video]

One of the beautiful things about art is that it is totally subjective. What I may think is beautiful, you may not.

The portrait of Abe Lincoln that hung in the Amway Grand won the ArtPrize popular vote, and if you’d like to teach yourself how to do it, you can, simply by searching YouTube.

I’m not saying this is where the artist, Richard Schlatter got the idea, but there is an instructional video available on the internet on how to make a giant portrait of Lincoln using pennies.

The YouTube channel Vat 19 devotes their site to “curiously awesome gifts, candy, toys, gummy, putty, puzzles, games, and more!” And they have a step by step video on how to make a giant Lincoln head portrait using a few less pennies than Schlatter did. (He used 24,000 — they used less than 15,000).

You don’t even have to find different colored pennies, they teach you how to treat the pennies to get different effects in the video!

My piece for ArtPrize next year? A portrait of Washington using quarters!!

That’ll cost too much won’t it?

The video was posted to Reddit, where the discussion about what constitutes art is quite interesting.
