Think Banned Books Are A Thing Of The Past? Think Again.

Did you know that this week is Banned Books Week? I guess a better question would be, did you even know that there were still banned books?

I remember back when I was a kid, the topic of "banned books" was a big one. I never really understood it then, and I certainly don't understand it now. I was an avid reader as a kid. I begged my parents to buy me a new book almost every time we went to the store. Those Scholastic Book Order things they gave us once a month? There were at least five books that I wanted every month off of that thing (my parents very rarely let me order them, though). I've never understood the idea of banned books, I guess, because I figure that books are something that parents should be able to police on their own.

Apparently This Group Can Resist His Schweddy Balls

Recently it was announced that Ben and Jerry's was going to start selling an ice cream called "Schweddy Balls", named after a famous Saturday Night Live Skit starring Alec Baldwin. Most people loved the idea, and I know of a lot of people who have tried, and really like, this particular flavor of frozen dairy goodness.

But, not every one is so keen on the idea. A website called OneMillionMoms.com is encouraging their members, and people everywhere to write letters to the Public Relations Manager at Ben & Jerry's requesting that they stop distributing the ice cream.

I take issue with this on so many levels.

High School Bans Makeup and Removes Mirrors

I'm pretty minimalistic when it comes to makeup. I'll tell you what though, I look like a freak without mascara; with blonde-tipped lashes, it's just mandatory. I don't think I'd take it too well if any authority figure told me I couldn't wear makeup-- especially back  in high school, when I first realized my eyelash problem. Recently, a high school in Britian did ban makeup and even went so far as to take the mirrors out of the girl's bathrooms.

Georgia School Faces Scrutiny For Not Allowing Transgender Student To Use Boys’ Bathroom

It can remember what the first day of school was like when I was 7. I was terrified even though I already knew all of the kids in my class and had been in school with a lot of them since pre-school. The beginning of the school year is hard for a lot of kids, but I can't imagine what it was like for this little boy in Georgia.

The little boy, simply known as D, was born a girl, but has been living his life as a boy for the last year. The boy's father is also a female-to-male transgender person. Last year, D was homeschooled, as his parents thought that it would be best.

But this school year, little D was actually excited to start a public school education. He was excited to make friends and spend time in an actual classroom. He was excited for recess. However, little D won't know what that's like. At least not this school year. At least not at Todd Grant Elementary School

Mom Fired After Taking Time Off to Give Her Son a Kidney [VIDEO]

Claudia Rendon of Pennsylvania has had a tough year. First, her mother and uncle died, then her father was diagnosed with leukemia. As if that wasn’t enough, she later discovered her son, Alex, was in need of a kidney transplant.

Doctors found she was a suitable donor match, so Rendon took time off work to give Alex the kidney he needed. But when she tried to return to her job several weeks later, she found she’d been fired.

‘SpongeBob Squarepants’ Affects Kids’ Ability To Focus? Sounds Made Up.

Why can't people just leave poor SpongeBob alone? Are they just jealous haters? Do they secretly covet his pineapple under the sea?

Back in '05 he faced scrutiny because some Christian evangelical group's leader thought that he was gay, and now, a study suggests that he's rotting the brains of America's youth. (At least he's not eating their brains. Though how awesome would zombie SpongeBob be?)

The study, published online today by the medical journal Pediatrics, found watching even just a little bit of  SpongeBob negatively affected 4-year-olds’ attention spans.

Canadian Radio Station Is Giving Away A Baby

We give away all sorts of cool stuff here on Channel 957, but we draw the line at giving away people. Specifically babies.

I mean, where would be even keep a baby? My office shouldn't be inhabited by anyone, let alone a child, and the prize closet is kind of full. No room for a pack and play.

But, as it turns out, some radio stations actually do give away human babies. Hot 89.9 in Ottawa, Canada is having a "Win a Baby" contest.

‘Toddlers and Tiaras’ Mom Dresses Up 3-Year-Old Like A Prostitute. On Purpose. [VIDEO]

I seriously need to stop watching 'Toddlers and Tiaras'. This week's episode is going to prove to be even worse than last week's where the little girl wore a padded bra to look like Dolly Parton. This week? Well, I'm guessing it's going to cause a lot of outrage among most normal-thinking people.

A preview shows three-year-old Paisley dressed to mimic Julia Roberts' character from the movie 'Pretty Woman'. In which she played a prostitute.

The outfit includes, but is not limited to, thigh-high boots and a skin-tight mini skirt. And, of course, it wouldn't be complete without a blonde wig!

Putting Your Kid In A Padded Bra? Just Another Episode Of ‘Toddlers & Tiaras’ [VIDEO]

"Toddlers & Tiaras"... I have no words. This show is such a train wreck, but I can't help but watch every time I come across it. I've seen the episode where that poor little girl is terrified about getting her eyebrows waxed. I've seen the one with the little boy who is a full blown diva at the age of six. I've seen the way that these mothers act towards their children, and I don't get it.

I'm sure that part of it is that these women are living vicariously through their cute-as-a-button four year old, but seriously? The things that they say to these kids should have CPS knocking on their doors.

Illinois Mom Beats Adult Children In Court

Growing up, there were certain things that I could count on. On random holidays (Halloween, 4th of July, Thanksgiving) I would get a card in the mail from my aunt and uncle who live in Gaylord with a dollar in it. My grandmother would probably give me a check for $11 on my birthday. And if I told my parents that I needed yet another pair of new shoes for yet another sport, they were probably going to tell me to buy them with my own money because I already had plenty of shoes (which I did). I think that that was a pretty normal childhood, even though my parents didn't want to buy me 47 new pairs of shoes every year, I don't consider them to be bad parents.

That's because I'm normal. You probably feel the same about your parents. And that's because you're normal, too. These kids I'm about to tell you about, they are in no way normal.
