A Non-Sarcastic Guide to Driving in Snowy Conditions [Video]

The roads weren't even bad around my neighborhood, yet traffic was still a mess!

Why is it when it snows everyone freaks out? I'm not talking about those of us who complain about the cold. I'm talking about how people tend to forget how to drive.

Last weekend I hardly left my apartment, and the roads weren't even that bad. Actually, the roads were just wet when I was out Saturday around 28th street. All I did was drive from Breton to Panera to pick up some soup and I almost got involved in three different accidents.

Again, the roads were just wet, it wasn't that bad. So what's up? I wish I knew, but let me share with you some winter driving tips from AAA.

• Turn your headlights on.
• Leave plenty of room between your front bumper and the car in front of you. This is a big one, if the roads are wet you're not going to be able to stop on a dime. Leave the distance of a couple car lengths between you and the person ahead of you.
• Slow down! Don't go so slow that you become a hazard, but when the roads are ice or snow covered it is typically unsafe to go as fast as the speed limit.
• Know your car. Take your car on a few side streets before heading out into more populated areas if you're not sure how your car will handle in the snow.
• Get off your damn phone! Pay attention to what you're doing.
• Keep an eye in your rear view mirror if you're stopped, so you can be prepared if the person behind you is struggling to slow down.

Being a defensive driver can safe your life. What does it mean? It means be prepared for stupid people, be ready to react to their mistakes.
