How often do you shower? Do you feel like you need to shower everyday or else you won't feel clean? If so, you may want to re-think that.

A poll done by Time Magazine found that the majority of Americans don't shower everyday. Most Americans, 53%, shower five times a week, 25% shower 3-4x/week, 14% twice a week and 8% shower only ONCE a week.

For those that shower only once or twice a week may sound really gross but in reality they're doing it right. An Infectious Disease Expert from Columbia University says that showering more than twice a week doesn't make a difference when it comes to hygiene.

“People think they’re showering for hygiene or to be cleaner, but bacteriologically, that’s not the case.”

In fact, you're actually doing more harm to your skin if you shower everyday. Not only will it dry out your skin but that can lead to cracked skin which can leave open gaps and makes it easier for bacteria to seep through. This, in turn, leads to infections. In addition, you're also stripping your skin of it's natural oils.

So, all in all, you only need to shower once or twice a week. And if you need to shower more, don't lather your whole body.

Hit your pits, butt and groin, which are the areas that produce strong-smelling secretions."
