Wyoming Gets $300,000 Grant, Announces Plans for Ideal Park

The City of Wyoming's Ideal Park suffered extensive damage after an EF-1 tornado touched down in 2014.

The rebuild of Ideal Park is set to take an important step forward after today's announcement of the City's plans to use a $300,000 grant to improve the park.

The tornado had peak winds of 100 to 110 miles per hour, injured six people and cut a path 300 to 400 yards wide as it traveled through Byron Center, Cutlerville, Wyoming and Kentwood for about 10 minutes on July 6, 2014.

90 percent of the mature trees in Ideal Park were lost in the tornado. Play areas and shelters were also damaged.

Last year, the City of Wyoming asked residents to take a survey to give their feedback on plans for Ideal Park.

Today, plans are set with the help of a $300,000 grant from the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund.

Wyoming will add the grant money to the previously budgeted amount of $503,000 for a total of $803,000 for phase one capital improvements. Planned improvements include:

• Replacing some of the mature trees lost in the tornado.
• Replacing damaged play areas and shelters.
• New paths
• New lighting
• Basketball court
• New creek overlook
• New drive and gateway
