Have you been outside and smelled smoke, but don’t know why?  You’re not crazy; it’s from the wildfires in Tennessee.

Wildfires are burning out of control in foothills of the Great Smokey Mountains.  So far both Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, both resort towns known for Christmas-themed entertainment, have been evacuated and hundreds of building and homes have been damaged or destroyed; including some of the outer cabins at Dollywood.

Dollywood officials say outside of the dozen or so cabins that have been damaged or destroyed, Dollywood and the DreamMore Resort are fine, but will remain closed until at least Wednesday.

The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency reports that Westgate Smoky Mountain Resort & Spa has been severely damaged, losing more than 100 buildings.  As for the Ober Gatlinburg amusement park and ski area, the agency says that preliminary reports of it being destroyed are false.

So why do we smell the smoke here?  That’s because of the strong south wind that helped move the rain out of our area, but also brought smoke from Tennessee into Southern and West Michigan.
