Is it Mothra? We think it might be Mothra.

I was walking out of the building this morning, minding my own business, when something caught my eye. This GIANT bug, just chilling on the carpet. It startled me, and then I was intrigued because I've never seen anything like it before.

Are we being invaded by a swarm of giant insects?!? Maybe. I did some looking around, and discovered that someone had found the same type of bug at their home on Grand Rapids' Westside. Luckily, Westsiders are smart, and were able to help figure out what this terrifying winged beast is.

Photos from the Entomology and Nematology Department at the University of Florida lead me to believe that the one that I encountered is a female dobsonfly, while the one found on the Westside is likely a male (males have those giant pincher looking things, females don't.) Fun(?) fact: the females can bite, but the males can not.

In case you're wondering, their larva are also terrifying, but at least they don't have wings (check out this photo).

The good(?) news is that these things only live between three and ten days.

So yeah, anyway, there's no Mothra-type invasion happening, but these bugs ARE around and they're super creepy.
