West Michigan Teen Dies After Jumping Into Lake Michigan

A hospital spokesman says the West Ottawa High School student who jumped into Lake Michigan from the pier at Holland State Park has died.

Emergency crews were called to Holland State Park around 6:20 p.m. Wednesday night following the report of a person in the water.

The the 17-year-old boy jumped off the North Pier along with a female friend. He was wearing jeans and a tee shirt. The female managed to get out of the water but the boy did not.

When emergency crews pulled the teenager from the water they began performing CPR. CPR was performed for more than 90 minutes. The boy was pronounced dead by doctors at Holland Hospital at 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Crews say they were able to find the teenager with a robot device.

"The robot has sonar capability," a sergeant with the Ottawa County Dive Team told WZZM-13. "We can put it in the water and see the image on the sonar. We also have video and can drive right to what we are looking for."

The water in the area where the teen was found is about 20 or 30 feet deep. Temperatures were between 40 and 57 degrees, the U.S. Coast Guard said. In water that cold, hypothermia can set in within five minutes.

So far in 2014, there have been 10 drownings in Lake Michigan. In 2013 the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project reports there were 24 drownings in the lake.
