Shrimp lovers, we have some bad news for you! Or shall we say Consumer Reports does. They just published a comprehensive study of the safety of frozen shrimp that uncovered some pretty disgusting results.

For the study they bought 342 packages of frozen shrimp, some raw and some cooked, from several major supermarket chains. They then tested the shellfish for pathogens and antibiotics, and found that 60 percent contained one of four types of bacteria that can cause disease in humans -- including 16 percent of the cooked, ready-to-eat samples. ewwwwwww

Even worse Consumer Reports also found traces of antibiotics in 11 of the samples, and the FDA forbids the use of antibiotics in shrimp aquaculture because they contribute to the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
