Ramen noodles are a favorite fast food choice among the Japanese and a staple of many college students' diets, which may be why many wouldn't consider a ramen noodle restaurant to be particularly gourmet. However, that idea has been proven wrong. Tsuta, a nine-seat noodle bar in Tokyo, has just received a Michelin star.

This is especially noteworthy, because Tsuta is the first ramen noodle establishment to receive a Michelin star ever. According to the Guardian, "Tsuta – which sells bowls from about £4.50 to £6.50 apiece at its shop in the north Tokyo district of Sugamo – features gourmet offerings such as rosemary-flavoured barbecued pork and soya sauce ramen with a hint of porcini mushroom.

'The most important thing is that customers like our ramen,' Takatoshi Itami, one of the restaurant’s cooks, said on Tuesday. 'We have good reviews thanks to them – getting a star was not our priority.'"

The Michelin Guide also listed 27 other ramen shops in Tokyo as Bib Gourmand, which is a notch below a Michelin star rating.
