The secret to a long-lasting marriage includes things like good communication, compromise, love... and possibly marrying the right profession.

According to stuff.co.nz, a study in the Journal of Police and Criminal Psychology, looked at the correlation between divorce and types of occupation.

If you want to live happily-ever-after stick with a dentist, podiatrist or optometrist. So a doctor, but not one that's going to be on call 24/7 like a surgeon.

...the marital breakdown rate for dentists was 7.75 per cent; 6.8 per cent for podiatrists, and only four per cent for optometrists."

Furthermore, if you marry an agricultural engineer, you're set for life since they only have a divorce rate of just 2%.

But, be cautious if you end up with a bartender, dancer or choreographer as you're more likely to get divorced. They each have a separation rate around 40%.

When you look at the occupations that have a higher rate of marriage breakdown, it appears that people in those jobs are social, and have more opportunities to meet new people on a regular basis."

These people are also more likely to be physically close to someone else.

Overall, jobs that are high stress with long hours are more than likely to cause problems in a marriage.
