This isn't about cat-calling. Or maybe it is. It's not about things that men will yell as I'm walking down the street. It's not about being followed down the sidewalk by guys trying to get me to talk to them.

It's about the seemingly innocent things that strange men will say to women in public places that really just come off as creepy and make many women uncomfortable.

So to you, random strange guy at the store last night who said "Hi, pretty!" when I walked in, I want you to know something - that's not my name.

My name isn't "Hi, pretty."

It's also not:

"How you doin', darlin'?"

"What's up, sweetie?"

"Hey, beautiful."

It isn't:

"Hi, honey."

"Hey, mami!"

Or,

"You look good tonight."

It isn't any of those if you don't know me.

If you don't know me, my name is a polite smile and a "Hi" or a "Hello".

This isn't about cat-calling, it's about what's comfortable for a woman by herself just trying to buy some gum and go home. And I understand, I do, that many of you just want to pay a woman a compliment. And that's nice of you. Pay that compliment to your mother, your sister, your aunt, or one of your friends. Because when you say those types of things to women you have never met who are just trying to buy gum, or walk to their car, or whatever it may be, you make them uncomfortable.
