More counties in Michigan are implementing text to 911 programs, WWMT reports.

The first county to adopt the system was Calhoun County 1 year ago.

Executive director of Calhoun County consolidated dispatch, Richard Feole told WWMT,

Now with the use of cell phones people are not using land lines as much.Text to 911 is very helpful for those individuals who can’t speak to us over the phone."

Another dispatcher recounted an incident in which a woman was trapped in a house that had been broken into. She used the text to 911 program to contact police.

So far 23 Michigan counties have adopted the program, with more counties, including Kalamazoo and Van Buren, implementing it soon.
