There’s a lot of stories about how loyal pets are to us.  Pets that travel crazy miles to be reunited and sometimes pets that have been on their own for a few years and find their way home… this is one of those stories.

6 years ago, 2010, the Hinton family was living in Texas Hill Country with Leo, their mixed breed terrier, who loved to cuddle and being groomed. One day, Leo went out to play on the family farm with 2 other dogs and never came home.  After weeks of searching, Allison and Bill Hinton assumed Leo was dead or gone forever.  Eventually the family moved here to Grand Rapids.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago, when Allison’s mom gets a call from the Kerr County Animal Services in Texas, saying they found a dog and when they scanned the microchip, her phone number was associated with the dog.  It took her a minute, and then remembered Allison’s dog running way 6 YEARS ago so she called her son-in-law Bill, who told the Kerr Daily Times:

“I couldn’t believe the phone call,” Bill Hinton said. “I said, ‘I think you have the wrong dog or the wrong number. There’s no way you have Leo.’ I wish that chip had GPS in it. I would love to have known if he was really in the wild that long.”

It looks as Leo has been living on the lamb and not with another family, because he has needed vet treatment for 6 bad teeth, and an extreme case of fleas that has left him with a skin condition; but he’s finally with the family that loves him!  They currently have a gofundme page set up to help with the vet cost and the flight back to Grand Rapids.
