Folk-country duo the Civil Wars invited Taylor Swift to join them onstage in Nashville last night (Jan. 12), where they teamed up to perform their new collaboration ‘Safe and Sound‘ from the upcoming ‘The Hunger Games’ soundtrack.

The Civil Wars introduced Swift to the crowd at the Ryman Auditorium by joking, “We like to give back to the community and to people that their careers are struggling a lot more than ours … She hasn’t had much time on stage and she’s really new at writing songs. Don’t be shy, it’s cool. Come on out.”

At that point Swift emerged, surprising the sold-out audience. She told them she considered wearing her Civil Wars t-shirt for the performance but opted against it.

They began playing the quiet song, with only an acoustic guitar backing up Swift’s vocals and the Civil Wars’ beautiful harmonies. Swift sounded near-perfect, hitting all the delicate high notes in the lines, “I remember tears streaming down your face / When I said, ‘I’ll never let you go’ / When all those shadows almost killed your light / I remember you said, ‘Don’t leave me here alone’ / But all that’s dead and gone and passed tonight.
