Take Your “Spices” And Shove ‘Em
I don’t know how much I’ve discussed this on the air, but I have a lot of issues when it comes to food. I’m not a picky eater by any means, nor am I a vegetarian, or a vegan; I just happen to be a girl who can’t eat a lot of things. I’ve never really figured out the hows or whys, all I know is that it seems to be hereditary, as my dad, a few cousins, and one of my aunts have the same problem.
It basically comes down to one thing: peppers. Red peppers, green peppers, jalapenos, chili peppers, habaneros, you name them, I can’t eat them. Now, most people would think that avoiding such things would be simple. They would be incorrect.
Next time you go to a restaurant, ask to see their allergy menu. Peppers aren’t even listed on there. I am that annoying girl who asks my servers a thousand questions about food. I’m sure they all hate me and secretly spit in my dinner before they bring it to me.
“Just don’t go out to eat,” is what I’m sure a lot of you are thinking. Also simple enough. Until you start reading food labels at the grocery store.
A LOT of brands will specifically list “red bell pepper flakes” as an ingredient, even though they’re primarily used as a spice. But some food manufacturers, well, they don’t sympathize with my plight.
In any given aisle in a grocery store, you will come across something that simply lists “spices” in the ingredient list. Spices? What the hell are spices? Spices could be about a thousand different things! Some I can eat, some I can’t.
Now, I get it, you don’t want to give away every single thing that you put into your product. I understand the “secret family recipes”, I do. But c’mon! Not only are some people in this world allergic to some of those “spices”, some people simply don’t LIKE them!
Do us all a favor and list all of your “spices”. If really you need to leave out an ingredient, try leaving out “water” or “parsley” or something else that doesn’t really taste like anything.
