28 is a magic number for West Michigan skiers.
When temperatures are 28 or below, it's time for the snow guns to get to work.
Snowmaking started on Monday, December 10, at Cannonsburg Ski Area in Belmont.
This weekend's storm has hit northern Michigan hard.
Over 180,000 customers were without power this morning in northern lower Michigan.
Seeing that it is December in Michigan, this may be outdated within minutes of publication, but our snowy season is off to a very slow start. Current forecasts show things staying that way...at least for now.
This morning more than a few people were a little late to work. The first big snow of the season tends to do that and it doesn't help that a lot of people seem to forget how to drive.

Last winter New Jersey created a $75 fine for drivers who drive with snow on their roof. The fine increases to $1,000 if the snow causes damage or injury. Should Michigan create a similar law?
Can Grand Rapids handle another 11" of snow by the end of the month?
Since we're not in a leap year, that means it would have to snow that much by next Monday which is only four days away!!

When school districts plan their school year, they take into account that there could be some snow days. It's Michigan, it snows, these things happen. But, snow days could eventually become a thing of the past. This is mostly because an unusually snowy winter could lead to too many snow days and kids having to make up days at the end of the year and the school district losing money.
An idea that's being piloted in a city in Ohio could work for cities like Grand Rapids and outlying areas like Lowell and Rockford as well. It would replace snow days with "e-days". In the event of an e-day students would be required to complete a certain amount of work online on days that the physical school building is closed due to the weather.
Minneapolis got 17 inches of snow on Saturday! That's the most they've had in a day since 1991 and the 5th biggest single day total on record.
I will now officially stop complaining about shoveling 3-4 inches last week
