Sugar and Salt – The New Health Foods?
Now that Thanksgiving and Christmas and the feasts that come with them are behind us we can look forward to a new year of healthy eating.
Low calories. Low carbs. Low fat. Foods with any/all of these features are always popular with the get-in-shape New Year’s Resolution crowd.
But could we be wasting time? Could sugar and salt be just as healthy?! If you believe every advertisement you hear, then sure!
Take Wendy’s new “Natural-Cut Fries with Sea Salt”. It’s sea salt. These fries MUST be better for you. Sorry. They’re not. In fact, according to USA Today:
…the new fries have more sodium: 270 milligrams per small order, up from 180. The large has 630, up from 460.
But what about all of the new pops which feature REAL sugar. Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Sierra Mist, and others have new versions that feature sugar instead of corn syrup.
Maybe sugar IS better for you than corn syrup. But isn’t that kind of like saying a Hershey’s bar with almonds is better for you than one without almonds because the almonds have protein? Just because it’s BETTER for you, doesn’t mean it’s GOOD for you.
Forget the labels. ”Natural” fries and ”natural” pops don’t cut it. Guess we’ll just have to dust off the elliptical.
