Steve’s Stories – The Honey Bee [Audio]
Today’s Steve’s Stories featured the North American Honey Bee. If you haven’t had a chance to learn about these amazing creatures, we can guarantee that you will be intrigued with how essential these critters are to the modern world!
Steve talked about how modern farming wouldn’t exist without our fuzzy, buzzy friends. It turns out that about 1/3 of all the crops in the United States are pollinated by bees. If we didn’t have bees, we couldn’t grow fruits or vegetables on such a large scale as we currently do.
Bees are shipped all over the country during the spring to pollinate crops. Some bees travel on the back of trucks for over 5,000 miles each year. Farmers will rent bee hives during the spring to help their fields get pollinated so their plants can grow their fruits and vegetables. Some bees head from the Florida orange groves to the Pennsylvania apple orchards to the Maine blueberry patches in a single year.
Steve dives deeper into how essential bees are in his Steve’s Stories segment, which you can listen to below!
