Like Zac Efron before her, Selena Gomez claims her enormous fame -- and her highly publicized former on-again/off-again relationship with Justin Bieber -- have proven to be more of a hindrance than a help when it comes to dating.

“For a while my private life was the most talked about thing,” Selena said in an interview with Vogue Australia via US Weekly. “Nobody really knows everything and they can only assume. You want to do what you love but all this other stuff overshadows it so it makes it a little harder for people to take me seriously.”

While the tabloid obsession with her private life is invasive, Selena also recognizes that the high interest level is, sadly, also a marker of success.

“I figured its just temporary,” she said. “I feel like that fortunately and unfortunately it’s where my life is at the moment and I have to accept it.”

But while intense scrutiny may be an integral part of keeping public interest high, Selena says it also makes potential love interests less willing to engage with her.

“I think people would think it’s kind of dumb [to date me],” she said. "Nobody would want to throw themselves into that situation where it was so heightened publicly, like, why would they?”

She continued, saying while she's often approached by other celebrities, she's not usually interested.

"The guys that do have the confidence to hit on me are not necessarily my type, but they think they are because I’m a pop star, I sing songs, do movies, I like to feel sexy and confident on stage,” she said.

“I’d be so stoked with a writer or producer or actor who is low-key, but those kind of guys are terrified of me!”
