It seems like every tax season we see another IRS scam or two pop up in the area, but things seem to be worse this year in West Michigan.

Several different police agencies have issued warnings about the calls this year, and the folks at FOX-17 decided to investigate.

The callers call up the victims, telling them that they owe money to the IRS, and if they don't pay immediately, they'll be arrested.

The Michigan State Police has issued warnings about these types of calls, and so have the Kent, Kalamazoo, and Van Buren County sheriffs.

Callers can sound convincing, and will often call back until they get an answer from you. The number even shows up as being from the IRS on caller I.D.

But, the IRS says that they won't threaten to arrest you, deport you, take away your driver's license, or any of the other things these callers have threatened if you don't pay your taxes.

If you have received one of these calls, you are asked to report it to the IRS.

If you have family members or friends who you think may be susceptible to this type of scam, be sure to warn them as well.

The Chief of the Lowell Police Department is doing his part by trolling the scammers...
