ESPN is reporting that Calvin Johnson knew before the 20155 season ever began that it would be his final season with the Detroit Lions. Sources told ESPN that Johnson has also relayed that message to the Lions organization.

Those sources told ESPN that Johnson told Lions' Coach Jim Caldwell the day after their final regular season game that he would not be returning in 2016. Caldwell urged Johnson not to rush into the decision, and to take some time to think about it.

The Lions are still hoping that Johnson will change his mind, but sources have said that it's not likely.

Johnson has battled injuries in recent years. He's been in the NFL for nine years, and recently has dealt with lingering ankle injuries. Johnson would be 31-years-old when the 2016 season started.

Like many players at this stage of their career, I am currently evaluating options for my future.

At that time, Johnson also said that he would have a final decision "in the not-too-distant future."
