Real Talk With Wendy – ‘No Means No’ [Video]
I normally don’t rant or rave about important issues on my show or in my blogs, but I had a conversation with someone the other day and it’s been nagging at me ever since.
Let me set up the scenario for you – I was talking to someone the other day about he huge party that happened in Mecosta County last weekend. There were a lot of problems that stemmed from it including arrests, alcohol and drug overdoses, and a sexual assault. When I brought up the sexual assault, I was surprised at the reaction that I received from one of the men I was speaking with.
When I mentioned it, he responded with, “Well, I don’t know. I heard that she was all about it at first. Then she decided she didn’t want to do it anymore and they wouldn’t stop, so she claimed sexual assault.” I don’t think that I’ve ever whipped my head around faster in my entire life than when he said that.
I explained, as calmly as I could, that just because she “seemed into it at first”, that doesn’t mean that her “no” gets nullified. People are allowed to change their minds. That’s not illegal. Sexual assault is.
If someone says no to your advances (whether they have previously consented or not), and you continue with them, that is sexual assault. Plain and simple.
If you have experienced sexual assault or if you need to talk to someone, the YWCA of West Central Michigan offers a variety of services for assault victims.
