One Dead and One in Custody in Purdue University Shooting [Video]
Purdue University officials confirmed Tuesday night that one man was fatally shot and one suspect was taken into custody following a shooting that occurred on campus around noon Tuesday.
“Our police reacted quickly, and the university alert notification system was activated immediately,” said Tim Sands, Purdue’s provost. “Our primary concern was to secure the building and make sure students were safe.”
Cody M. Cousins, 23, walked into an Electrical Engineering Building classroom, firing several shots and killing 21-year-old Andrew F. Boldt, Purdue Police Chief John Cox said.
Cox confirmed that both men are students at Purdue, but the connection between the two is not completely clear.
Classes at Purdue, located in West Lafayette, Ind., were suspended for the remainder of Tuesday and all day Wednesday.
At a news conference Tuesday evening, Cox said the shooter apparently targeted the victim and gave himself up willingly to authorities after the shooting.
“As a parent of Purdue students myself, I want to let parents know we will do everything possible to make sure counseling services are available and that we will do everything possible to support our students, faculty and staff during this difficult time,” Sanders said.
A candlelight vigil was held on campus Tuesday night.
Police arrived on the scene within minutes and secured the building.
The shooting, which occurred in the basement area of the Electrical Engineering Building, was reported at 12:03 p.m., and text alerts were issued immediately to campus.
The gunmen, of Warsaw, Ind., and Centerville, Ohio, was in custody within minutes of arriving at the scene, Cox said. A shelter-in-place for the remainder of campus was lifted about 1:15 p.m. The victim is from West Bend, Wis.
