A team of artists and psychologists are allowing people to symbolically breakthrough issues by physically breaking plates at DeVos Place during ArtPrize Seven.

The broken plates are then turned into the ashes of a mosaic which shows a phoenix rising.

The ArtPrize entry is titled "BREAKTHROUGH".

Breakthrough Team is made of psychotherapists Randy Flood and Laura Bennett; and mosaic artist Mark Bird. Many others have contributed to the team by donating plates and assisting in other ways.

Flood explains the ArtPrize entry:

It's a mental health piece to demonstrate that we're all human and we all struggle, but when we face our struggles and our pieces are broken we can assemble new lives together as a community.

It's getting it out in the open. As humans we all struggle with self esteem or an inferiority complex, so to have us do it more in public and take the stigma away from that struggle, we don't have to feel so alone with it.

"BREAKTHROUGH" is on the sidewalk outside of DeVos Place along Monroe Avenue.
