The death of Prince last week came as a shock to us all, but if new reports are correct, the iconic musician himself may never have taken the necessary steps to ensure his estate is properly settled in the event of his passing.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, his sister Tyka Nelson said Prince had no known will when he died. It's a development that could result in an ugly and complicated battle over his fortune, a vault of unreleased material and his sprawling, $27 million Paisley Park compound in the suburbs of Minneapolis.

Nelson reportedly filed paperwork asking to be appointed executor of his estate in documents filed Tuesday in a Minnesota probate court and said immediate steps must be taken to protect Prince's business interests.

Prince was married twice, but both ended in divorce. He had no children and both his parents are deceased. Nelson is his only living sibling.
