Ottawa County Released Top Dog Names of 2015

Move over Spot and Rover! There's a new top dog name in Ottawa County.

According a release from Ottawa County, in 2015, the most common used dog name in Ottawa County when purchasing a dog license was Bella.

In Ottawa County, a dog license can't be issued without the owner providing the full name of the animal. According to Bradley Slagh, the Ottawa County Treasurer, people seem to be upping their dog-naming game, "Other notable names of 2015 were: Trinity, Sir Buster Boo, Snapdragon and Ember."

The county stresses that having a dog license can help quickly return a lost animals to its home. When a lost animal is found by a county resident or an officer, the license number attached to the collar can be entered at the county's website, and the owner can be identified without a trip to the humane society.

By law in Ottawa County, dogs must be licensed.

Ottawa County also offers cat licensing. According to Slagh a favorite name listed amongst licensed cats in the county is Chuck Norris. "Although with a name like that, it can probably take care of itself," said Slagh.

One of the other interesting statistics to come from the report are the breeds of the most licensed dogs in the county. The top three breeds based on the number licensed in 2015 are:

Labrador Retriever
Golden Retriever
Shih-Tzu

Michigan law requires that all dogs have a valid rabies shot and a current county license. Ottawa County dog licenses are available online, by mail, or in person at the County Treasurer's Fillmore and Grand Haven offices, and at participating veterinarians and government offices.
