Olive Garden is defending its policy to serve customers as many breadsticks as they want as part of their "Italian generosity." Starboard Value released a 300-page criticism about the restaurant for a whole array of reasons, including the endless breadsticks, its failure to salt boiling water for pasta and the length of the asparagus they serve. The company's considerably shorter, 24-page report doesn't address any of the issues specifically, but says that Olive Garden is already implementing strategies to improve their performance. Starboard is lobbying to gain control of Darden's board of directors at the company's annual meeting in order to cut costs and improve restaurant quality.
