You may have seen a Facebook post being shared by your friends warning parents about a potential child abduction at the Target in Gaines Twp. The story told in the post is frightening - a mother saying that a strange man tried to take her daughter from a cart.

However, WOOD-TV8 and the Kent County Sheriff's Department have discovered that things didn't happen exactly as the woman described on social media.

Many stories like these have been shared around social media over the past few years. In fact, this story was shared by a friend of mine on Facebook just the other day. This is another good reminder that everything that you read on Facebook isn't true.

I'm not saying that the woman who posted about the Target incident didn't think that her child was in danger, it just means that sometimes you have to take a step back and look at a situation from all sides before blinding sharing a Facebook status.

I'm also not saying that you shouldn't be aware of your surroundings and trust your gut when you think that something shady is happening.

If you feel unsafe, please call the police. Sadly, posting the story on Facebook and never contacting authorities about it won't make anyone safer.
