NFL Concussion Lawsuit Settled For $765 Million

In a shocking turn of events that could have prevented many years of expensive legal fees, the NFL and roughly 4,500 former players agreed on a settlement over the brain injuries that the players suffered on the field.

Former U.S. District Judge Layn Phillips, who is the court-appointed mediator on the case, announced that the NFL will fork over $765 million to allow for benefits and compensation for the retired players and the money will also provide medical research as well as safety research.

Judge Phillips said in a statement that “This is a historic agreement, one that will make sure that former NFL players who need and deserve compensation will receive it, and that will promote safety for players at all levels of football.” She continued to say, “Rather than litigate literally thousands of complex individual claims over many years, the parties have reached an agreement that, if approved, will provide relief and support where it is needed at a time when it is most needed. I am deeply grateful to Judge Brody for appointing me as mediator and offering me the opportunity to work on such an important and interesting matter.”

While the settlement still must be approved by U.S. District Judge Anita Brody, this is a settlement that only the NFL could hope for. While 765 Million is a lot of money, it’s not enough to make the NFL risk all of it’s fortunes in a courtroom on something they just could not win. I’m just glad the people and former players who suffered from these injuries get the help they need for themselves and their families are not going to be taken care of.
