Newsweek,”Dying Cities” Writer Respond To The Grand Rapids Lip Dub

The Grand Rapids LipDub, an undertaking sparked and executed by Rob Bliss, is already an internet sensation.

In the description of the video on Youtube, Bliss says:

This video was created as an official response to the Newsweek article calling Grand Rapids a “dying city.” We disagreed strongly, and wanted to create a video that encompasses the passion and energy we all feel is growing exponentially, in this great city. We felt Don McLean’s “American Pie,” a song about death, was in the end, triumphant and filled to the brim with life and hope.

Well, it seems that Newsweek got the message loud and clear! Last night on their Facebook page, they wrote “Memo To Grand Rapids”, after many people linked the video on their page, explaining why the article that they had posted said what it said:

To the Grand Rapids crowd:

First off, we LOVE your YouTube LipDub. We’re big fans, and are inspired by your love of the city you call home.

But so you know what was up with the list you’re responding to, we want you to know it was done by a website called–not by Newsweek (it was unfortunately picked up on the Newsweek web site as part of a content sharing deal)–and it uses a methodology that our current editorial team doesn’t endorse and wouldn’t have employed. It certainly doesn’t reflect our view of Grand Rapids.

Later, in the thread of comments, a Newsweek staffer re-iterated that sentiment by simply saying:

Thanks all. I’ll stick around this thread tomorrow to answer any more questions. I’m sure people will keep posting the vid to our wall–and that’s cool, we love it–but please tell a friend Newsweek ♥’s Grand Rapids!

As if that wasn’t enough, has responded, too! In a rather lengthy, and in no way apologetic article, the author says,

The energetic response from Grand Rapids residents in producing all of the videos, articles and Facebook pages in support of their city should serve as proof that with a bit of energy and creativity, any shrinking city can band together to defy the demographics and show off its true vitality.

Other cities should take note.

We don’t care about your methodology,, we just wanted you all to know that we don’t take being called a “dying city” well.

Grand Rapids is making it’s mark on the world. We’ve shown people that we are a vibrant, energetic, city and our residents take pride in where they live.
