A new law approved by Grand Rapids administrators aims to keep those riding bicycles safe.

The new "safe passing" law will make it illegal for a motorist to pass a bicycle on the road if there's not at least 5 feet between the vehicle and bicycle.

In simple terms, if there's not enough room on your right to allow 5 feet between your car and a bicycle, you will have to wait to pass. In fact, similar words were spoken by city managing director of design and development, Suzanne Schulz (according to MLIVE).

Now for my opinion, sorry I can't hold back. I love this idea, mainly because I've seen drivers not budge but a foot away from a bicycle, that's just dangerous. I do however have some frustrations with those bicyclists who refuse to obey the same traffic laws as vehicles. I mainly get irritated when I see someone riding a bike blow through a red light, or refuse to yield to the right (when able), or come up on my right and get in front of me at a red light (that's just stupid).

So, PLEASE, drivers, be careful around bikes! Bikers, please follow the laws, if not for motorist's sanity, for your own safety out on the streets.
