Neil Armstrong's NASA application was a week late and if it weren't for his friend, Dick Day, secretly slipping it into the pile of on-time applications, he would have been rejected.  Dick Day worked at NASA's Manned Spacecraft Center and helped Neil out when his application had arrived late.

Without Day's help, Armstrong might have never been accepted into the program and we might have never heard his famous words: "This is one small step for man, and one giant leap for mankind."
