Schools Who Still Use Native American Mascots Could Soon Lose Some Funding

It’s been an ongoing conversation, starting with the Washington Redskins, but even finding a local audience as well.

A couple of weeks ago, Belding Area Schools announced they would become the Black Knights after a conversation with students, parents and others in the community.  Paw Paw schools have been discussing the use of Redskins for their mascot and recently decided to keep it.

Well know there may be even more of an incentive to shy away from mascots that are seen as offensive in the state of Michigan.

According to WOODTV, Brian Whiston, who is the State Superintendent of Schools, is preparing to start dropping the financial aid the state gives schools by 5 to 10 percent, for those schools who continue to use Native American mascots.

Now, to do this he first has to make sure it’s legal, so he’s getting approval from the state Attorney General’s office and if that passes, then he’ll push it through to the state capital for official approval.

From WOODTV’s story, the State Superintendent’s office has been working with the different Michigan tribes to establish which mascots are considered offensive.

An answer to this plan is expected in the next 30 days.
