Muskegon Heights joins Detroit, Flint, Pontiac, and Saginaw as a Michigan State Police "Secure City."

WOOD-TV 8 reports the designation of Muskegon Heights as a "secure city" is due to violent crime statistics in the area.

The commitment from MSP to decrease crime within the city includes five troopers and one sergeant, who will be assigned to patrol the city. MSP will assist the city's police force of 18, as it has struggled to answer the almost 20,000 calls for service each year.

Officials say this will not be a quick fix, but hope to see a reduction in crime by this time next year.
