This weekend is another holiday weekend which means people will be travelling to lake shores, camp grounds and family homes for weekend getaways.  AAA predicts a 1.5% increase in the number of drivers on the road, traveling 50 or more miles from home over the 4th of July weekend, to just over 1.4 million.  This would be the highest number of Independence Day weekend travelers in 13 years.

While the roadways will be extra busy, we’re also seeing gas prices being the lowest they’ve been in 11 years over the 4th of July weekend.  Which is definitely a major reason we’ll see so many more cars on the highways.  The average gas price per gallon in Michigan is $2.47 which is down almost $0.45 from this time last year, according to AAA Michigan’s Public Affairs Director, Susan Hiltz:

"The average motorist has saved about $100 on gasoline so far this year compared to the first six months of 2015," said Hiltz. "Low gas prices, combined with rising wages, are helping boost disposable income, making travel more affordable."

GasBuddy.com has prices around our area as low as $2.22 for a gallon of gas.  See the lowest gas prices around the Grand Rapids area by clicking here.

The official holiday weekend travel period is Thursday, June 30th thru Monday, July 4th. Peak time for holiday travel in Michigan according to AAA, will be Friday and Monday afternoon.
