No one stays the same, and Miley Cyrus proved that at the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards in Inglewood, California tonight (Sunday, August 27), when she took to the stage to croon her delightful new single, "Younger Now."

Wearing a fuchsia play suit, her hair in a rockabilly ponytail straight out of John Waters' Cry-Baby, the pop star put on a playful, kitsch, yet emotive display with the wistful title track off her forthcoming album.

Flanked by tykes on bikes and a crew of elderly, glittery greasers dancing behind her, the singer made a seamless return to her country roots, even breaking into a bluesy Americana rock breakdown towards the end—poodle skirt and all.

The former Hannah Montana star last performed at the VMAs in 2013, when she sang "We Can't Stop" and teamed up with Robin Thicke for a controversial duet of his smash hit "Blurred Lines."

"Younger Now" is off Cyrus' new album of the same name, due out September 29.
