With the invention of spellcheck and autocorrect, it seems that people are forgetting how to spell. They still teach spelling in schools, though, and we see that every year around this time when they hold the annual Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Google took the time to put together a list of the most commonly misspelled words in every state (based on how many people Googled "how to spell ______". And Michigan's word seems a little strange to us.

It's gray.

Apparently a lot of us think that it's spelled "grey". Which it can be, but according to Google that's not the correct spelling. In America we're supposed to spell it "gray", while "grey" is considered the British spelling.

We're not alone in our inability to spell the name of the world's drabbest color - folks in Oklahoma and South Dakota also seem to struggle with it.

It seems a lot of folks in the U.S. have a rough time with the word "desert" (the barren, sandy wasteland) and "cancelled", and for some reason the folks in New Hampshire and Arizona have a rough time spelling "diarrhea".

Not surprisingly, folks in Ohio can't seem to figure out the word "banana". Banana. There's a popular song out there that spells out the word about a million times and they still can't figure out how to spell it!

Here's how other states fared.
