Some people look for heat when Michigan's cold winters hit.

Ice fishermen are a little different.

Whether you are experienced at ice fishing or have never tried it, you are welcome to enjoy the cold during Michigan's annual free ice fishing weekend this February.

The Michigan DNR has announced the dates for 2017's Free Fishing Weekends. Free ice fishing will take place February 18 - 19. Summer's free fishing weekend will be June 10 - 11.

All fishing fees will be waived. Michigan residents and non-residents can fish without a license. All other fishing regulations still apply.

Many communities organize local fishing events or competitions to celebrate free fishing weekends.

Michigan's first winter Free Fishing Weekend was in 1994.
