This is crazy! Did you know it’s illegal for a man and woman to live together without being married in Michigan and Mississippi?

That’s right, only two states have this law and we’re in the same boat as Mississippi. Now in fairness, this law hasn’t been enforced in quite some time, I’m talking decades, but it’s a misdemeanor punishable with up to a year in jail and a fine of $1,000!

Well good news, the Senate Judiciary Committee Tuesday, unanimously passed a vote that would take the law off the books and make it easier for people living together to get tax credits by being able to claim a dependent exemption.

Senator Steve Bieda told the Detroit Free Press

It's not just that the law is archaic and isn't enforced anymore, said bill sponsor Sen. Steve Bieda, D-Warren. It also carries tax implications. A person can't claim a dependent exemption for a household if the relationship is deemed "illegal" by local or state law.

This actually has a negative impact on taxpayers in the state," Bieda said. "I’d like to see Michigan beat Mississippi on this.

Now the bill, SB 896, will move onto the full Senate for their vote. Let's hope they unanimously decide to wipe this law off the books.
