Since this morning over 100 Grand Rapids area DTE customers have been without gas.  Many didn't know about the outage until they returned home from work to find their house without gas.

DTE is working to restore service.

WZZM reports:

Around 11 a.m. several people called the WZZM 13 Information Center complaining that they had no natural gas service. One of those callers was from a restaurant near Lake Michigan Drive and Covell NW, which was unable to use its gas-burning stove.

A retirement home is also being impacted by the gas outage, leaving elderly residents without heat.

DTE tells WZZM 13 News the outage is affecting at least 120 customers.

A spokesman for the utility company says the problem was caused by work being done on the gas lines, which allowed air into the system.  The spokesman says the problem is not a leak.

He says crews are working to restore service, and will work into the night if necessary.
